Probably the best IR site in the world
Of course, Carlsberg do have an investor relations site, and theirs is pretty good … but let’s go with the famous fantasy of “Carlsberg don’t do X, but if they did, it would probably be the best X in the world”.
The best IR site in the world would probably look like this:
Personalised
Recognising me, the best IR site in the world would present me with personalised information. Perhaps it would:
- welcome me by name
- tell me how much my shareholding had changed since my last visit
- offer me news items based on my interests
- and, knowing whether I was a retail investor, professional investor, journalist or analyst, be able to present me with relevant sections of information to read first.
Customisable
The best IR site in the world would let me choose the information I wanted to see as a priority on my regular visits.
I’ve already suggested that the site could personalise its presentation of information based on who I am, but I’d also like to be able to tailor the presentation for my personal preferences.
I could select elements from the range of information available that I would like to see on my IR home page, and on each visit, that is the information that would be presented first. Clearly the rest of the information should also be available, but if I have chosen to have, say, a three-month share chart, details of the latest AGM and the 5 most recent news headlines on my home page, that is what I would see.
Interactive
The best IR site in the world would help me to:
- analyse the financial data for that company, either online, or by downloading spreadsheets - preferably both.
- contact an IR representative immediately to answer those urgent questions, by live chat or IM - or whatever my preferred method is.
- choose which companies I’d like to compare to this one for charting
- receive a regular feed of the latest analyst estimates for this company.
Such a site would also let me know if there were significant changes to the data on the site, or to the share price (based on boundaries that I had set) and would remind me of events that I might want to be aware of, or to attend, using whatever method I preferred (RSS, email, text message, IM …)
Easily accessible - and pleasing to the eye
I would also want the site to be available to me whatever the tool I am using to read it with (or listen to it with) - and whatever my personal physical abilities might be. I would also want to enjoy using the site, so it has to be stylish as well as accessible.
I suppose asking for a cold beer on top of all that might be a step too far - even for the best IR site in the world?

2 share price trackers - and more
What tool could you offer your visitors that is of benefit to both of you?
I’ve known about the Reckitt Benckiser share price tracker for a while … it opens in a tiny new window from the Reckitt Benckiser site, and it monitors the Reckitt Benckiser share price for you until you close the window.
Unicredit have gone one better. Yes, their Desktop will track the share price for you. It will do this in real time, providing you with an intraday chart. Iit will also act as a feed reader for whichever Unicredit feeds you’ve signed up to, show you the company’s event calendar, and provide you with their latest press releases. It is completely independent of the website, so you don’t need to open your browser to get the information - definitely a timesaver.
And more: you can add up to 10 external feeds to the reader, which makes it even more useful. After all, you don’t want a desktop widget for each company in which you have an interest. My only quibble is that 10 external feeds aren’t very many, and probably wouldn’t be enough to replace the average feed reader (I have over 100 in my feed reader, which is way too many) but it is certainly better than nothing.
Unicredit definitely merit a round of applause for this little tool.

Signing the web
Is your site truly accessible? Are you providing the best possible service to all your visitors?
I expect you’ve taken the first step, and perhaps your site is accessible to level A (or even AA). But have you considered taking the extra step, and providing accessible charting in your investor section, transcripts for all your video or audio sections on site, or providing a sign language translation for your webcasts and videos?
There are up to 70,000 users of British Sign Language (BSL) in the UK, and up to 500,000 users of American Sign Language (ASL) in the US. This is a big constituency which you should perhaps be considering.

Starbucks: how to communicate change
Starbucks provides us with a demonstration of a great way of communicating the significant changes under way (changes in their approach and in their senior management structure).
The home page has been replaced with a letter from Howard Schultz, addressed to all customers. At the bottom are links to copies of a letter and a voicemail from him to all Starbucks partners (employees), together with a link to a Questions and Answers page dealing with the changes, and to the Investor Relations pages, which shows the press release at the top of the list. If we click through to review the details of the Board of Directors, we can see that the changes have been reflected on this page, which is up to date. Even potential job applicants have been provided with a link to the letter/voicemail to partners and letter to customers in the careers section.

Conchango: 15 minute site review
Word on the web is that Conchango is to become listed on AIM from 15 January … I thought I’d have a quick look at their site, to see how it’s going.
Conchango and AIM Rule 26
There are a few key elements missing on the site at the moment, that will be necessary to comply with AIM Rule 26 requirements.
