social media starfish 300x274 All Atwitter

There’s much to say about Twitter for business. And people are definitely saying much!

Although Twitter in particular (and social media in general) may have an assortment of business uses, recruiting is arguably one of the most potent. Why?

  • Twitter builds (and builds on) relationships.
  • Twitter provides a way to start and continue conversations.
  • Twitter can be used in a wide range of ways, to fit a particular company and to suit specific needs.

In short: It’s all about creating and nurturing connections.  And since recruiting is about connecting seekers with jobs and companies with employees–there seems to be a natural fit. Twitter has the potential to increase effectiveness of the Careers website by improving the opportunities for two-way communication.

I don’t have new wisdom to add to the Twitter discussion, but the topic is important—so my contribution is a set of quality links that might shortcut the road to Twitter-savvy, or offer some new insights if you’re already there.

Starting off with a basic orientation to social media in recruiting: I looked at a lot of slideshows on this topic (not as much fun as it sounds, actually) and came up with two favorites:

  • This hefty deck from recruiting consultant Thomas Shaw is fun to watch and covers a lot of territory. There’s also a PDF version.
  • A snappy photo tour from Jose de Francisco may be more inspirational than educational—but it creatively conveys the scope and texture of social networking.

Zooming in on Twitter specifically—and more specifically, on Twitter for recruiting—here’s an informative short video by Bryan Starbuck, and a high-level overview in print from the Recruiter Guy blog.

For a little more depth: Here’s some serious business intelligence on Twitter from Corporate Eye’s own Lucy Nixon. Then try Michael Gray’s crisp guide to getting off the ground with an effective Twitter business profile. Followed by a link-laden Business Week analysis with the engaging title “Why Twitter Matters”.

And if you don’t like any of my selections, find PLENTY more at Pistachio.

Finally, a couple of party favors: A thoughtful personal perspective on Twitter from Aliza Sherman and an amusing view from columnist David Pogue.

(About the Starfish image at the top of this post: It’s Darren Barefoot’s improved version of Dan Scoble’s original diagram. Find it on Flickr.)

Twitter is fantastic for recruiting! Jim Stroud has some great resources on it over at http://www.therecruiterslounge.com/2009/02/27/twittering-recruiters-directory-v10/ .
