(Not looking super- hard, I confess, but keeping an eye out.)  I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve found any, but I do think this story is worth reporting:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 1:  Arrives in my Inbox the weekly issue of SmartBrief on Workforce.<\/strong> SmartBrief provides quick summaries and links to various current stories, and comes in many different flavors\u2014in addition to Worforce, I subscribe to Entrepreneurs, Leadership, Interactive Advertising, and Social Media.  Fine and free resources, so if you haven\u2019t already, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartbrief.com\/signup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">check out the options<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this issue . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 2:  I discover an article about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/magazine\/content\/09_12\/b4124046224092.htm?chan=magazine+channel_new+ideas+for+talent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data mining in HR<\/a>.<\/strong> It contains some interesting ideas about using data analysis in large companies.  For example:  \u201cMicrosoft studies correlations between thriving workers and the schools and companies they arrived from. Also, by analyzing communications within Microsoft, analysts can ID \u2018superconnectors\u2019 who help share ideas and others who appear to hold them up, so-called bottlenecks.\u201d  Although less than 2% of companies are starting to crunch people numbers, Rupert Bader, director of workforce planning at Microsoft, comments that &#8220;You have to bring the same rigor you bring to operations and finance to the analysis of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 3:  I notice there are 69 comments on the story.<\/strong> That\u2019s quite a few in relation to the typical business story, so I drill down and find that many commenters are not happy.  Their remarks range from variations on \u201cthis is just sad\u201d to \u201cwasn\u2019t it fancy math that got us into a financial crisis?\u201d to \u201cGo ask HAL, Mr. Bader.\u201d\u00a0  If you skip over the squabbles, these comments are well worth reading, as they flag some serious concerns and also highlight perceived issues regarding HR.<\/p>\n<p>So then . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 4:  I wonder if there are ideas that apply data mining to recruiting.<\/strong> No news on that yet, but I do end up discovering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadlook.com\/recruiting-software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Broadlook<\/a>, a turbo-charged tool for Internet research, with a specific application to recruiting.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idonato.com\/2008\/03\/26\/real-world-data-mining-example-recruitingblogscom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See a demonstration here<\/a>, along with an example of the Broadlook ROI proposition.  Then go off-topic and view the About page for Broadlook CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idonato.com\/about-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donato Diorio<\/a>\u2014just because it&#8217;s interesting.<\/p>\n<p>And finally . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 5:  I am reminded that \u201cData mining\u201d is a very complicated concept.<\/strong> It\u2019s difficult to implement data mining successfully, and very challenging to interpret\/utilize results effectively.   Plus&#8211;the term is used by different people to mean different things.  Sometimes wildly different things.
