--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/224;\" \/>A fascinating blog article from CSR maven <a title=\"Mallen Baker\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mallenbaker.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mallen Baker<\/a> caught my eye last week.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been chewing away on it ever since.<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"Time To Redfine Ethical Investment\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mallenbaker.net\/blog\/post.php?id=177\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time To Redefine Ethical Investment<\/a> he strikes directly at the root of what\u2019s widely seen as the flaw in today&#8217;s business operations: responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Not the responsibility of managers and executives: the responsibility of investors.\u00a0 Not socially responsible investment, but responsible company ownership.<\/p>\n<p>In among everything else we&#8217;ve lost the fact companies are owned by their shareholders.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just an issue of finance; it\u2019s an issue of management and governance as well.\u00a0 Investors are owners.<\/p>\n<p>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ownership Equals Responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If I own a dog I\u2019m responsible for its behaviour.\u00a0 If I own a house I\u2019m responsible for its upkeep.\u00a0 If I own a company I\u2019m responsible for its authority and influence.<\/p>\n<p>An example of this comes from a quick glance at <a title=\"Alliance Trust\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancetrust.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alliance Trust<\/a>, the only FTSE 100 company which is solely focussed upon investment.<\/p>\n<p>Their <a title=\"Alliance Trust 2008 Annual Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancetrust.co.uk\/pdfs\/annual_report_2008.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2008 Annual Report<\/a> says that only 5% of their shareholder votes went against the management of the companies they invested in.\u00a0 The reasons given were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>shareholder dilution, a reasonable concern for an investment organisation<\/li>\n<li>keeping chairman and chief executive roles separated, a common US\/UK bone of contention<\/li>\n<li>opposing merger plans, no doubt allied to shareholder dilution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing specifically wrong with opposing management plans on these grounds or with Alliance Trust\u2019s own stance given the prevailing business environment.<\/p>\n<p>However, should company owners be responsible solely for financial performance, or should investors engage with their possessions&#8217; broader impact?<\/p>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4654 lazyload\" title=\"i-cannot-save-the-planet\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/i-cannot-save-the-planet.jpg\" alt=\"i-cannot-save-the-planet\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/i-cannot-save-the-planet.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/i-cannot-save-the-planet-150x112.jpg 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 240px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 240\/180;\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Responsible Company Ownership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The appliance of sustainability to supply chain logistics has seen companies setting targets up and down their supply chain, engaging both their customers and their suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>The same principle applies to company ownership and management.\u00a0 As Mallen says:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"narrowblock\"><p>Never mind the handful of activist investors who turn up wielding placards at company AGMs &#8211; ethical investment has to be something that describes how businesses in the new age are owned, period.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"clearleft\"><\/div>\n<p>Like a supply chain, sustainability has to be embraced by a company, its management <em>and its owners<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the socially responsible investment of money following companies\u2019 sustainability credentials.\u00a0 This is pro-active.<\/p>\n<p>This is investors engaging with the companies they own beyond the <a title=\"Triple Bottom Line\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triple_bottom_line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">triple bottom line<\/a>.\u00a0 This is hands-on.<\/p>\n<p>This is also very scary &#8212;
