Not only here at Corporate Eye (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/has-skittles-hijacked-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/skittles-website-zany-or-just-plain-crazy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brand<\/a>), but all over the web\u2014discussed and debated by bloggers, social media mavens, and even the relatively staid Wall Street Journal (which provides an interesting analysis).<\/p>\n<p>An interesting part about this:  the Skittles site was already more than a little bizarre.  (If you don\u2019t recall&#8211;or never saw&#8211;the \u201cbefore\u201d version, visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/rds.yahoo.com\/_ylt=A0oGkxp3OrBJohMAMo1XNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTByZWgwN285BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkAw--\/SIG=11m1cdjh4\/EXP=1236372471\/**http%3a\/www.archive.org\/web\/web.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wayback Machine<\/a>. )  So the change may be more noteworthy for its wholesale embrace of postmodern media than merely for novelty per se.<\/p>\n<p>Of course my investigation has to focus on the Careers aspect, which leads to Skittles\u2019 parent company, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mars.com\/global\/Careers+At+Mars\/Careers+At+Mars.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mars<\/a>.  And switching to the Mars site is like going back over the Skittles Rainbow to land in Kansas again:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/mars-careers.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4576 lazyload\" title=\"mars-careers\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/mars-careers-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"mars-careers\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/mars-careers-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/mars-careers-150x80.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/mars-careers-900x485.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/mars-careers-924x498.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/mars-careers.jpg 989w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/161;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearall\">It\u2019s a pleasant design and the site has pleasant functionality.  In short\u2014it fits into a visitor\u2019s expectations.  But it doesn\u2019t stand out.\u00a0 (Even when you discover that you can drag the M&amp;Ms around.)<\/div>\n<p>If you are planning a makeover of the Careers site, or even starting from scratch, one of the fundamental design decisions is whether to play it safe or spice it up.  A Careers site that looks like 85% of all others runs the risk of boring visitors\u2014or at least, not getting their attention.  On the other hand, a site that is radically different from the mainstream is open to one of several visitor interpretations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These guys don\u2019t know what they are doing.<\/li>\n<li>This company looks interesting!<\/li>\n<li>This site is confusing\/awkward\/unfriendly.<\/li>\n<li>I feel right at home here!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And so on.  Individuals bring their own assumptions and motivations to the site with them, and (at the risk of over-generalizing) visitors who are looking for security may favor something safe and traditional, whereas visitors looking for a challenge may be attracted to something adventurous and creative.  Age may also be a factor\u2014though not necessarily in a predictable way, since older-somethings could be ready for a big change while younger-somethings may be looking for a safe place to get started.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no pleasing everyone, of course, so it\u2019s important to consider the target audience for your industry and your company, as well as the main types of jobs to be listed.  And of course, it\u2019s important to maintain a constructive connection to the company\u2019s brand image.  But as food for thought, here are three principles that would hold up pretty well across the board:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A site that looks as if it were made with a Careers-shaped cookie cutter leaves the impression that no one cared very much about<em> the site<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>A site that looks great but doesn\u2019t work well leaves the impression that no one cared very much about <em>the visitor<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>A site that makes the visitor jump through hoops to get information (or to send a resume or apply for a job, etc.) leaves the impression that no one cared very much about <em>recruiting<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(For an example of the middle ground&#8211;mainstream done with pizzazz&#8211;visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umpquabank.com\/1.0\/pages\/careers.aspx?prodCAT=qCareers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Umpqua Bank<\/a>.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s no doubt that Skittles created attention with their extreme makeover!
