So thought I\u2019d round up a few examples of small things that can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Message:  Job-seekers Welcome<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.starbucks.com\">Starbucks<\/a> hangs out the Welcome sign by putting a Careers link in the exact middle of its About page.  The prominent placement indicates that jobs\/people are central to the company.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearall\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/quiktrip-menu.jpg\" alt=\"Quiktrip\" title=\"Quiktrip\" width=\"199\" height=\"47\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 199px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 199\/47;\" \/><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.quiktrip.com\">QuikTrip<\/a> highlights the Jobs tab on its top menu with a red circle and the note &#8216;Excellent.&#8217;  This double-duty detail not only makes Jobs seem important\u2014it also delivers a one-word message that sets up positive expectations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/ceo-message.jpg\" alt=\"Qualcomm CEO\" title=\"Qualcomm CEO\" width=\"244\" height=\"116\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 244px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 244\/116;\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Message:  We\u2019re Serious<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.qualcomm.com\/\">Qualcomm<\/a> offers a substantive three-minute video in which the CEO talks about the importance of employees in the company\u2019s success.  The presentation signals visitors that filling jobs at Qualcomm is not just an agenda item for HR\u2014it\u2019s a top-down priority.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearall\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/qualcomm-recruiters.jpg\" alt=\"Qualcomm recruiters\" title=\"Qualcomm recruiters\" width=\"280\" height=\"95\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 280px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 280\/95;\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Message:  We\u2019re on Your Side<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another nice Qualcomm touch is introducing the visitor to some recruiters.  Every recruiter profile includes a photo, plus interview tips and the recruiter\u2019s own insights about the company.  The effect is not only a feeling of personal relationship, but also an impression that Qualcomm <em>wants<\/em> job-seekers to succeed.  (One criticism:  This nifty feature is buried behind an Employee Profiles link.  I think it deserves a spot on the top page!)<\/p>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/interview-prep.jpg\" alt=\"BCG: interview prep\" title=\"BCG: interview prep\" width=\"280\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 278px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 278\/105;\" \/><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcg.com\/\">Boston Consulting Group<\/a> takes the on-your-side message even further with an Interview Prep section that is extremely cool.  In fact, it\u2019s so cool I\u2019ll talk more about it in a future post.  Preview:  BCG has come up with a simulation that really works.  But even if this prep feature were just a few bullet points or an ordinary Q&#038;A, it would still send a strong signal of support to the job-seeker.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Message:  Let\u2019s Connect<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/connection.jpg\" alt=\"NetApp: connection\" title=\"NetApp: connection\" width=\"280\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 284px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 284\/66;\" \/><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.netapp.com\/us\/\">NetApp<\/a> puts a contact invitation prominently at the top of each page on the Careers site.  While &#8216;call right now&#8217; is not a feasible strategy for every company&#8211;someone has to be at the other end of the phone!&#8211;an invitation of some kind (search jobs, send resume, download fact sheet, etc.) gives visitors the opportunity to make an active connection with the company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reminder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Details are important.  If the major elements\u2014core message, look-and-feel, content items\u2014of a site are strong, the minor elements can add a valuable extra dimension.  And sometimes it\u2019s the little things that make the visitor feel important, or distinguish your site from a competitor\u2019s, or help synch the Careers message with the company\u2019s brand focus.
