{"id":39101,"date":"2011-10-28T16:40:40","date_gmt":"2011-10-28T15:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=39101"},"modified":"2021-01-05T15:06:01","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T14:06:01","slug":"battle-of-ideas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/battle-of-ideas\/","title":{"rendered":"Battle of Ideas: A Philosopher&#8217;s Holiday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ideas.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"ideas\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39104 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ideas.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ideas-150x84.jpg 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/168;\" \/><\/span><br \/>\nIf, like me, you&#8217;re feeling a tad jaded, what with the clocks going back and having to dig your winter coat out again, perhaps a workout for your brain would be just the thing.<\/p>\n<p>Ready for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.battleofideas.org.uk\/\">Battle of Ideas 2011<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabmiller.com\">SABMiller<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shell.com\">Shell<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwc.com\">PWC<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rca.ac.uk\">Royal College of Art<\/a> (together with many other partners and supporters), this is a two-day festival of public debate organised by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instituteofideas.com\/\">Institute of Ideas<\/a> in London &#8211; this weekend, 20-30 October.<\/p>\n<p>75 different debates are scheduled with 350 speakers covering a wide range of topics, and while they\u2019re naturally not all directly related to corporate communications, they all look intriguing.<\/p>\n<p>Those that seem immediately relevant (my grouping, not theirs!) include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>CSR<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is big business ruining food? <\/li>\n<li>Profiting responsibly <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Discussions of profit, ethics and sustainability, asking whether CSR is more than smoke and mirrors, and whether it can help restore trust in business.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nInnovation <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is innovation good for?<\/li>\n<li>Idea factories: manufacturing and making in the 21st century.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Two different sessions, with different angles, exploring innovation, design and production in a creative economy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activism and Whistle-blowing<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loyalty in an age of whistle-blowing and Wikileaks<\/li>\n<li>Rise of the clicktivists<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Is whistle-blowing bravery or betrayal? Is the internet enhancing debate, or making it more superficial? Interesting questions about protest&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Employees<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interns or slave labour? <\/li>\n<li>Warning: women at work <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Two hot topics this year&#8230; glass ceilings and the Davies Review, anyone? And should you be taking on interns at all?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The web<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Online communities: cyber-village or antisocial network?<\/li>\n<li>Is technology making us smarter or dumber?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Two sessions \u2013 among others \u2013 asking how the internet is changing our behaviour both on- and off-line.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interested?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Battle of Ideas website has a few font issues, but the way that each debate has a page with related pre-reading and details of the speakers, and that the various debates are linked and cross-linked in strands and across themes is very nicely done.
