{"id":36717,"date":"2011-02-04T14:36:48","date_gmt":"2011-02-04T14:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=36717"},"modified":"2021-01-07T17:52:51","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T16:52:51","slug":"monitoring-your-brand-reputation-online-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/monitoring-your-brand-reputation-online-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Monitoring Your Brand Reputation Online Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent study by <a href=\"http:\/\/analytics.informationweek.com\/\">InformationWeek<\/a>, business technology professionals were surveyed about their companies&#8217; established initiatives for monitoring their brand reputations online and responding to specific types of online conversations about their brands.\u00a0 As reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/Article.aspx?R=1008220\">eMarketer<\/a>, the results aren&#8217;t too surprising given that there is no recipe for success for social media marketing yet.<\/p>\n<p>Survey respondents were almost equally split when asked how their companies monitor brand reputations online between using search alert services such as Google Alerts (56% of respondents) and not knowing how their companies monitor brand reputations (40%).\u00a0 If your company falls into that 40%, you need to put together a plan to monitor your brand&#8217;s online reputation immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Following is the breakdown of how survey respondents reported that their companies monitor online brand reputations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Search alerts = 56%<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t know = 40%<\/li>\n<li>Outside vendor = 16%<\/li>\n<li>Specialty applications like Radian 6 or Scout Labs = 15%<\/li>\n<li>Other = 4%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even more interesting were the survey results related to how companies respond to negative online conversations and similar social Web activities.\u00a0 The chart below shows the survey results.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearall\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36718 lazyload\" title=\"emarketer-negative-online-brand-conversations\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/emarketer-negative-online-brand-conversations.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"405\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 325px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 325\/405;\" \/><\/div>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it&#8217;s important to recognize that technology professionals responded to this survey, not marketing professionals.\u00a0 However, since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/the-importance-of-internal-brand-advocates\/\">employees are the strongest brand advocates<\/a> that a company can have, there is still something to learn from these results.\u00a0 Employees should be better educated about the brands they work with.\u00a0 It&#8217;s up to brand managers and marketers to put together the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/branding-from-within-%E2%80%93-the-importance-of-internal-brand-building\/\">initiatives to build internal brand advocates<\/a> as well as provide the education about how to talk about their companies and brands online.\u00a0 When it comes to responding to negativity about your brand online, I typically teach my clients the <a href=\"http:\/\/keysplashcreative.com\/fight-flight-or-flood-how-to-respond-to-a-negative-online-buzz-about-you-or-your-business\/\">3 Fs &#8211; flight, fight or flood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Image: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/Article.aspx?R=1008220\">eMarketer<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent study by InformationWeek, business technology professionals were surveyed about their companies&#8217; established initiatives for monitoring their brand reputations online and responding to specific types of online conversations about their brands.\u00a0 As reported by eMarketer, the results aren&#8217;t too surprising given that there is no recipe for success for social media marketing yet.
