I usually make time to watch MSNBC\u2019s early morning weekend show Your Business<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 And just about every week, I see something interesting and think \u201cI should blog about that\u201d\u2014but then<\/em> I think . . . small biz\/SOHO\/entrepreneurial ideas aren\u2019t very relevant for a corporate audience.<\/p>\n

Now that I\u2019ve turned it over in my mind several times, though, I\u2019ve decided that some \u201csmall\u201d ideas really do apply well to \u201cbig\u201d companies.\u00a0 Two of the regular features from Your Business<\/em> that provide useful ideas for recruitment and corporate communications are Elevator Pitch and Top Five.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s really fun to see what the Pitchers come up with, and how the volunteer venture capitalists respond to their presentations.\u00a0 But beyond the entertainment value\u2014what I\u2019ve realized by watching these segments is how much the Careers website is like an Elevator Pitch!\u00a0 Basically, there\u2019s a very limited amount of time to capture a visitor\u2019s attention and persuade him\/her to \u201ctake a meeting\u201d (i.e., find out more about your company).<\/p>\n

For a speedy refresher on the elevator pitch, try this classic Fast Company<\/em> article<\/a>.\u00a0 Rule number one for crafting the perfect pitch?\u00a0 \u201cAssume short buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking of Fast Company–<\/em>it\u2019s not very corporate, but it is<\/em> full of ideas about getting things done creatively in business.\u00a0 Why not just flip through it occasionally?\u00a0 Ditto for Wired<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s (almost) terminally techie\u2014but if your company ever hires anyone under thirty or needs a steady supply of IT wizards, then it’s worth a few minutes every now and then to check out what the target group might be reading.<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s a blog that’s chock-full of interesting news and information, but<\/em> you might miss entirely because of the name:\u00a0 Small Business Labs<\/a>.\u00a0 FYI:\u00a0 It\u2019s future-focused, wide-ranging, and sometimes surprising, so . . . what\u2019s not to like?<\/p>\n
