{"id":35509,"date":"2010-11-03T08:51:59","date_gmt":"2010-11-03T08:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=35509"},"modified":"2010-11-03T08:51:59","modified_gmt":"2010-11-03T08:51:59","slug":"global-gender-gap-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/global-gender-gap-report\/","title":{"rendered":"The Global Gender Gap Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/AfriSki.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35510 lazyload\" title=\"AfriSki\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/AfriSki-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"AfriSki\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The fifth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weforum.org\/en\/media\/Latest%20News%20Releases\/NR_GenderGap2010\">Global Gender Gap Report<\/a> from the World Economic Forum (WEF) \u201cassesses 134 countries on how well they divide resources and opportunities amongst male and female populations.\u201d The report measures the gender inequality gap in four areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Economic participation and opportunity<\/li>\n<li>Educational attainment<\/li>\n<li>Political empowerment<\/li>\n<li>Health and survival<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Good news: <\/em> The United States has finally broken into the Top 20, after hovering around 30 for the first four years of the report.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bad news: <\/em> The United Kingdom has tumbled from a ranking of 9 in 2006 to #15 this year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Great story: <\/em> The tiny <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lesotho\">Kingdom of Lesotho<\/a> has advanced from #43 in 2006 to (drum roll, please) #8 in 2010.\u00a0 Lesotho has just two million people and only a modest economy\u2014but its literacy rate is among the highest in Africa.<\/p>\n<p><em>More good news: <\/em> Looking across the board at progress made since the first report, it turns out that gaps are closing in health and education, with current data showing that (in the 134 countries covered) 96% of health gaps and 93% of education gaps have been closed.<\/p>\n<p><em>More bad news:<\/em> Only 60% of economic participation gaps have been closed.<\/p>\n<p>WEF also publishes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weforum.org\/en\/Communities\/Women%20Leaders%20and%20Gender%20Parity\/GenderGapNetwork\/CorporateGenderGap\/index.htm\">Corporate Gender Gap<\/a> report, which is based on a survey of HR execs from 600 major employers in twenty countries, representing sixteen industries, and ranging in size from 1,000 to 30,000 employees.\u00a0 The survey\u2019s 25 questions assessed companies on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>representation of women within their establishments <\/li>\n<li>the use of gender-equality practices such as measurement and target-setting, work-life balance policies and mentorship and training<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The survey also gathered respondent opinions on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the biggest barriers to women\u2019s leadership<\/li>\n<li>the probable effects of the economic downturn on women\u2019s employment in their countries and industries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The resulting report is not only informative but actually very interesting.\u00a0 It provides detailed summaries of the findings by country and by industry.\u00a0 From the report website you can download the whole report or a summary chapter.<\/p>\n<p><em>High-level observations<\/em> from report co-author<strong> <\/strong>Saadia Zahidi: \u00a0&#8220;The findings of the report are an alarm bell that the corporate world is not doing enough to achieve gender equality. While a certain set of companies in Scandinavia, the US and the UK are indeed leaders in integrating women, the idea that most corporations have become gender-balanced or women-friendly is still a myth.
