\u00a0(Check out this <a href=\"http:\/\/searchsoftwarequality.techtarget.com\/generic\/0,295582,sid92_gci1282255,00.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">lively international discussion<\/a> for multiple perspectives on IT certification.)<\/p>\n<p>From the individual\u2019s perspective, there are some good reasons to consider certification:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preparing for exams provides the chance to review information, assess strengths and weaknesses, and maybe even learn something new.<\/li>\n<li>Passing exams and obtaining a certification can be a confidence booster.\u00a0 Success feels good!<\/li>\n<li>On the other side of the coin, <em>failing<\/em> an exam could be a needed wake-up call for folks who have been overestimating their skill level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although having a certification won\u2019t magically double your market value or ensure a promotion\u2014those initials after your name actually may add a little heft to business cards and resumes.<\/p>\n<p>So for those who can afford the time\/effort\/money, and don\u2019t expect a miracle, certification can make sense.\u00a0 Unfortunately\u2014no certifications available yet for Brilliant Online Corporate Careers Communication.\u00a0 But until the BOCCC comes along, there\u2019s the PHR (Professional in Human Relations) and the SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Relations) from the HR Certification Institute.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrci.org\/Blog\/\">Visit their blog<\/a> for a further view into the details.<\/p>\n<p><em>Revisiting Disability<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the USA marked an anniversary:\u00a0 twenty years since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).\u00a0 For some reflections on the accomplishments since then\u2014along with the gaps that still exist\u2014listen to an NPR conversation:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/bb\/law\/july-dec10\/ada_07-26.html\">20 Years After ADA, Accessibility Remains &#8216;An Evolutionary Process&#8217;<\/a>.\u00a0 There\u2019s a transcript too.<\/p>\n<p>And for a global perspective, check out the website provided by the UK\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.equalityhumanrights.com\/\">Equality and Human Rights Commission<\/a>.\u00a0 Three good reasons to visit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A colorful and creative design<\/li>\n<li>A summary of the Equality Act 2010, as well as a full-text PDF<\/li>\n<li>A guide to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD), as well as full-text versions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>An Interesting Survey . . . <\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve just browsed through a new survey being conducted by Aberdeen\u2019s Human Capital Management practice.\u00a0 I did not answer the questions, since I\u2019m not in their target demographic\u2014but I did get some ideas by reading the questions, so there will be a post in the future.\u00a0 Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aberdeen.com\/\">see for yourself<\/a>.\u00a0 The survey is online for another week or so, and the results will be out in October.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Many thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elbfoto\/1522184170\/\">elbfoto<\/a> for the &#8220;beautiful rose.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summer slowed down the posting for Careers in July, so this month the Wrap-up offers a few items that didn\u2019t make it online.
