{"id":33996,"date":"2010-07-22T10:13:47","date_gmt":"2010-07-22T09:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=33996"},"modified":"2010-07-21T10:49:00","modified_gmt":"2010-07-21T09:49:00","slug":"phenomenal-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/phenomenal-facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"Phenomenal Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/800px-Julia_set_indigo.png\"><img decoding=\"async\"  title=\"Julia fractal\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/800px-Julia_set_indigo-300x225.png\" alt=\"Julia fractal\" width=\"275\" height=\"200\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 275px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 275\/200;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I am (at last) getting into Facebook.\u00a0 For some reason, Twitter made sense to me immediately, while Facebook has remained largely a mystery.\u00a0 But after a few weeks of floundering around, I\u2019m starting to understand a little better.<\/p>\n<p>Biggest help:\u00a0 Oddly enough, a talk by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booktv.org\/Program\/11663\/The+Facebook+Effect+The+Inside+Story+of+the+Company+That+is+Connecting+the+World.aspx\">David Kirkpatrick on BookTV<\/a>.\u00a0 Kirkpatrick (formerly senior technology editor at Fortune magazine) is the author of <em>The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company that is Connecting the World<\/em>, which came out just a few weeks ago in the US, and will soon arrive in a UK edition.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, <em>The Facebook Effect<\/em> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thefacebookeffect#%21\/thefacebookeffect?v=app_107503509286219\">its own Facebook page<\/a>, where you can read an excerpt, watch an interview, and (of course) \u201clike\u201d the book.\u00a0 More than 5,000 likers so far, and the book is well-ranked on Amazon niche lists for E-Commerce (#3) and Company Profiles (#7).\u00a0 In addition to an in-depth retelling of the well-known dorm-to-dominance story of Facebook\u2019s creation\/evolution, Kirkpatrick provides thoughtful analysis that applies not only to Facebook, but to the whole social media landscape.<\/p>\n<p>The second biggest help in my Facebook education was stumbling over what I now think of as the \u201cfriend tripwire.\u201d\u00a0 As an individual, you can plunk along for quite a while just adding friends occasionally for some seemingly good reason.\u00a0 Then&#8211;you add one well-connected activist, and you find yourself with a generous pile of recommendations and requests.\u00a0 (If you open the door at this point, you need to understand about lists . . . )<\/p>\n<p>So all of a sudden, I began to think of Facebook as something like a fractal generator\u2014i.e., a self-similar replicating system that creates intricate patterns.\u00a0 From a slightly different perspective, it\u2019s like a complex system organizing itself in response to initial conditions (\u201cme\u201d) and various attractors (\u201cfriends\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>If that works for you, happy to be of service!\u00a0 But if not it doesn\u2019t matter, because probably everyone finds their own point of entry for Facebook, and no one really needs to think of it beyond the practical applications anyway.\u00a0 Which brings us to the real point:\u00a0 Facebook for recruiting.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, there was a lot of hype around \u201cFacebook for recruiting,\u201d and companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jobingtech.com\/social\/facebook\">Jobing<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appirio.com\/company\/press\/2009_0130facebook.php\">Appirio<\/a> introduced apps and services to build out that potential.\u00a0 So far, however, these approaches have not seen spectacular success in performance or adoption . . .<\/p>\n<p>So how <em>is<\/em> Facebook being used effectively to find talent?\u00a0 That turns out to be a longer story, so stay tuned for two more installments:\u00a0 Corporate Recruiting via Facebook (with a useful case study) and Recruiters on Facebook (with some interesting examples).<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(And yes, that\u2019s a lovely Julia set, shared by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Julia_set_%28indigo%29.png\">Eequor<\/a>.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am (at last) getting into Facebook.\u00a0 For some reason, Twitter made sense to me immediately, while Facebook has remained largely a mystery.\u00a0 But after a few weeks of floundering around, I\u2019m starting to understand a little better.
