Summer isn\u2019t really<\/em> less fraught than the rest of the year, but we keep on thinking there\u2019s more time to play during the warmer months . . .<\/p>\n

In the spirit of the season, here are a few ideas that have (or at least could have) something to do with careers\/recruiting\/work\/job, with a little fun in the bargain:<\/p>\n

  1. Catch up on your reading.<\/strong> If you haven\u2019t already followed last year\u2019s Summer Reading suggestions<\/a>\u2014why not now?\u00a0 And add to the list Penelope Trunk\u2019s Brazen Careerist:\u00a0 The New Rules for Success<\/a>, <\/em>a quirky look at what works\u2014and what matters\u2014in today\u2019s employment environment.\u00a0 Some chapter titles to give you the flavor:\u00a0 First-Time Managers Do Not Need to Suck; Sex Discrimination Is Everywhere, So Don\u2019t Try To Run; and Getting a Promotion Is So Last Century.<\/li>\n
  2. Start your own blog.<\/strong> Seriously.\u00a0 TypePad<\/a> is super-friendly, offers dozens of great designs, and gives you a 30-day free trial or even a free microblog. \u00a0WordPress<\/a> also has a free version.\u00a0 Don\u2019t think about it in terms of an audience–blogging is a great way to talk to yourself!\u2014but if you want to do something more in the professional line, you can start your own blog on ere.net<\/a> with almost no effort.\u00a0 (Extra motivation: ere.net bloggers can compete during July to win an iPad.)<\/li>\n
  3. Get some business cards. <\/strong> No, not those dull ones you already have a box of.\u00a0 Some really great<\/em> ones from MOO<\/a>.\u00a0 MOO offers a wonderful array of designs, or you can upload your own images\u2014and every card in your order can have a different design if you want to go nuts.\u00a0 These cards really do grab attention, so they are worth the small investment.\u00a0 Use them to invent an extra\/alternative version of yourself, start that freelance thing you\u2019ve been thinking about, or add some snap to your professional image.<\/li>\n
  4. Organize your life.<\/strong> That\u2019s a big one\u2014but hope springs eternal, so if you\u2019ve already run the gamut of time management methods with no luck, the Pomodoro Technique<\/a> may be just what you\u2019re looking for.\u00a0 All you need is one of those kitchen timers that looks like a tomato, plus a free ebook from the Pomodoro website. You\u2019ll either love it or hate it, but you\u2019ll get some fun from the try-out.\u00a0 And some people say this method worked for them when nothing else did.\u00a0 (Pomodoro<\/em> is Italian for \u201ctomato,\u201d by the way.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
