{"id":32580,"date":"2010-04-21T10:30:24","date_gmt":"2010-04-21T09:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=32580"},"modified":"2010-04-12T10:30:48","modified_gmt":"2010-04-12T09:30:48","slug":"facing-up-to-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/facing-up-to-facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"Facing Up to Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I admit it.\u00a0 I\u2019m completely on board with Twitter, but can\u2019t close the deal with Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>That may be because I dismissed Facebook at an earlier stage in its evolution, and didn\u2019t reconnect in time to &#8220;grow up&#8221; with this social media steamroller.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s now, however, and I\u2019m trying to get with the program.<\/p>\n<p>So I went in search of some really basic help in (a) understanding the world of Facebook and (b) using Facebook effectively as a business tool.\u00a0 It seems like there is less lore available for Facebook than for Twitter\u2014but that may just be my imagination.\u00a0 Anyway, here are the best resources I found in my first round of looking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A nice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/leahmessina\/using-facebook-for-business-and-blogging-basics\">presentation from Sinuate Media<\/a>, available on SlideShare. \u00a0Only the first half is about Facebook (the second half is about blogging), but a couple of slides in the presentation were really helpful to me.\u00a0 One shows a Facebook home page, the other a Facebook profile page\u2014and both have neat labels showing what\u2019s on each part of the page.\u00a0 (Seriously, I need this level of explanation.)\u00a0 There\u2019s also a useful summary of the difference between groups and fan pages, along with tips on making pages dynamic, using privacy settings, and advertising on Facebook<\/li>\n<li>While at SlideShare, I discovered help from an unexpected source:\u00a0 the United States Navy.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/USNavySocialMedia\/facebook-basics-for-navy-commands\">Facebook Basics for Navy Commands<\/a> begins with some smart questions about why and whether to utilize Facebook, follows with step-by-step instructions, and includes a useful glossary.\u00a0 (It\u2019s really a document, not a presentation, therefore hard to read on the SlideShare page.\u00a0 Click the Download tab to get a printable PDF version.)<\/li>\n<li>It really helps me to see ideas in action, so I was glad to find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/jeffreylcohen\/10-examples-of-b2b-facebook-fan-pages\">10 Examples of Facebook Fan Pages<\/a>, a presentation from Social Media B2B.\u00a0 See what Dell, Sodexo, Forrester, Gartner, and other companies are doing with the Facebook platform.<\/li>\n<li>Although this presentation goes way beyond the basics, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/onitz\/fancy-facebook-fan-pages-a-step-by-step-guide\">Fancy Facebook Fan Pages &#8211; A Step By Step Guide<\/a> is worth a look, if only to get an idea of how much can be done with Facebook. \u00a0From Vanity URLs to Video Apps, this detailed guide by Ineternet strategist Olaf Nitz shows how to take Facebook to the max.\u00a0 (There are 153 slides, mostly graphics with little text, and the presentation is not available for download.\u00a0 So\u00a0 kick it up to full screen and watch a few slides at a time.)<\/li>\n<p>As you may have guessed, I never got past SlideShare&#8211;but these resources have actually put me on a better footing with Facebook.\u00a0 I\u2019ll let you know when I\u2019ve tried some hands-on experimentation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I admit it.\u00a0 I\u2019m completely on board with Twitter, but can\u2019t close the deal with Facebook.
