Well, maybe . . . <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/worker-shortage-coming-as-population-ages-report-2010-03-22?reflink=MW_news_stmp\">A recent report<\/a> from the MetLife Foundation and San Francisco-based Civic Ventures (a boomer-issues think tank) projects that as employment ramps up again, spot labor shortages will begin to appear.\u00a0 And in ten years or so, there won\u2019t be enough new workers to replace the large number of retiring boomers.<\/p>\n<p>Of course there may be off-setting factors.\u00a0 More and more boomers are delaying retirement, either because they can\u2019t afford to quit working or because they\u2019d rather work than loll around.\u00a0 In addition, productivity increases and automation continue to reduce the number of workers actually needed to make the wheels go round&#8211;at least in some parts of the world, and some areas of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand again, an aging population will require an enlarging pool of health care workers and other service providers.\u00a0 The MetLife report expects \u201csocial sector\u201d jobs (which includes education, non-profits, the arts, and other activities in addition to health care) to provide nearly half of all non-farm job growth in future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Takeaway?<\/strong> Organizations need to start thinking today about talent management strategies that will work for tomorrow.\u00a0 For example\u2014some companies will benefit in the long term by encouraging their older employees to stay around, while others need to bring in larger numbers of young workers.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cA Seismic Shift Toward Contingent Labor\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another warning shot comes from Jeb Evans (AVP of Resource Management at the TriZetto Group) in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hci.org\/lib\/seismic-shift-towards-contingent-labor-new-norm?utm_source=HCI_Members_Email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=03-24_NSDU_Mem&amp;utm_content=contact%40cynthiagiles.com\">a presentation<\/a> at the 2010 Human Capital Summit. \u00a0\u00a0Evans sees contingent workers comprising 20-30% of the labor market over the next few years\u2014and that may well be an underestimation.\u00a0 \u00a0This \u201cnew norm\u201d has both advantages (contingent labor can be a cost variable when times are lean) and challenges (such as protecting intellectual property).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Takeaway? <\/strong> Many companies consider contingent labor as a necessary evil, and fail to integrate this area into their talent management strategy.\u00a0 Get <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ere.net\/2009\/03\/15\/managing-contingent-labor-strategically\/\">a detailed view<\/a> and some excellent ideas of this topic from Dr. John Sullivan at ere.net.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Virtues of Virtual Work<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/hillicon-valley\/technology\/90133-obama-wants-expansion-of-teleworker-programs\">recent remarks<\/a> at a forum on Workplace Flexibility, the U.S. president praised trends and technology that support \u00a0telecommuting\u2014certainly an important factor in the morphing of the labor picture.\u00a0 Telecommuting, which lets workers in conventional companies do some or all of their work without physically coming to an office, has been limited in the past to only a few types of workers, but the practice is rapidly expanding to a wider variety of jobs.\u00a0 And there is a continuing increase in the number of purely virtual \u00a0companies that have no centralized office at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Takeaway? <\/strong> Recruiting virtual workers presents some new challenges, as well as new opportunities.\u00a0 Conventional job applications and evaluations are designed for onsite workers and may miss some of the important considerations in hiring people that will make good offsite workers.\u00a0 So far, the only specialized tool I\u2019ve found for hiring remote workers is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clomedia.com\/industry_news\/2009\/September\/5031\/index.php\">LIMBRA\u2019s Virtual Worker System<\/a>, but I\u2019ll keep looking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geograph.org.uk\/photo\/176661\">Michael Patterson<\/a> for the photograph, taken near Heath, Derbyshire, Great Britain.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Labor shortage ahead!
