Continuing the 2010 tradition<\/a>, some updates and short takes for last month:<\/p>\n

Following up on the meeting detailed in Confused about .jobs Job Boards?<\/a> . . . reports (sort of) about the event were summarized by John Zappe in this post<\/a> on ere.net.\u00a0\u00a0 It certainly doesn\u2019t clear anything up, but if by chance you\u2019ve followed the saga thus far, it\u2019s a must read.<\/p>\n

If you are new to the topic, however, you can just jump directly to the Recently Breaking News.\u00a0 In the nick of time for this wrap-up, Zappe posted an update<\/a> that reveals a new turn of events.\u00a0 To wit:\u00a0 Direct Employers has taken down all the controversial .jobs sites (which were in beta but scheduled to launch this month) for \u201cenhancements.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s more detail, and more back story.\u00a0 But that\u2019s the gist of it.<\/p>\n

Also out recently is this AP story<\/a>, which presents a sunnier version of the .jobs story, largely in the context of profiling Bill Warren.\u00a0 \u00a0Reading all these items together, it\u2019s tempting to think there has been a collision of good intentions, ambitious goals, poor communications, questionable decisions, and changing times. But of course it\u2019s the outcome that will ultimately define \u201cwhat happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the meantime, here\u2019s one more thought about Employment Happiness<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s assumed today that there\u2019s a quantifiable value to having happy employees:\u00a0 lower turnover, better employer brand, higher productivity, etc.\u00a0 But that\u2019s a relatively recent point of view.\u00a0 Were the people making Model Ts happy in the workplace?\u00a0 The gray-flannel-suited men of mid-century Manhattan?\u00a0 The drug-enabled workaholics of the zoom-zoom 80s?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s arguable that corporate America as we know it was built by unhappy people\u2014and since things haven\u2019t been going too well in the economy since the idea of worker happiness became popular . . . maybe there\u2019s food for thought.<\/p>\n

This last item is a bit out of order, since posts about the new Fortune 100 Best Places to Work list will be coming up in March.\u00a0 But I wanted to get in a couple of small discoveries from the list that didn\u2019t fit into the future posts:<\/p>\n
