--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 199\/300;\" \/>You never know how blinkered you\u2019ve been until those blinkers are removed.<\/p>\n<p>A few days ago I spotted Michael Portillo on TV using the medieval term for Europe: \u201cChristendom\u201d.\u00a0 It was a programme about Christianity and in context, so there was nothing wrong with it.<\/p>\n<p>But it makes the point, very well and very powerfully, how grounded our cultures are in a particular way of approaching life and its concomitant issues, even after centuries of change.<\/p>\n<p>Hence one of the big stumbling blocks to Turkey&#8217;s accession to the EU: there are some who still say that the EU is and should remain Christian at heart.\u00a0 Turkey, being a Muslim country, can therefore not join.<\/p>\n<p>A similar set of blinkers surrounds CSR.\u00a0 We in the west tend to think of it as a business strategy .. what if it was more personal than that?<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How Is Western CSR Perceived in Africa?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ida Horner runs <a title=\"Ethnic Supplies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ethnicsupplies.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethnic Supplies<\/a>, a UK based company which trades fashion accessories and gifts direct from villages in Africa for sale in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>She has a very hands-on approach to her business and regularly visits her suppliers in Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and Madagascar.\u00a0 Through this contact she has developed an innate understanding of how CSR is tackled in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>I interviewed her for this piece, and started off by asking how CSR and sustainability are tackled by foreign companies in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor some companies, their approach is \u2018first do no harm,\u2019\u201d she says, \u201cBut many are in Africa just to extract raw materials or exploit (the people there)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This is often the way we perceive CSR operating outside the US and EU, no doubt often backed up with cheque book philanthropy to create a good image.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What&#8217;s So Special About African CSR?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-32145 lazyload\" title=\"Ruhanga Schoolroom\" alt=\"Ruhanga Schoolroom\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Schoolroom-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Schoolroom-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Schoolroom-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Schoolroom-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Schoolroom-900x602.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Schoolroom-924x618.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Schoolroom.JPG 1600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/>So I asked whether there was a uniquely African way of addressing the same issues.\u00a0 The answer was all about people:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople look out for each other &#8230; people see it as their responsibility to help.\u00a0 This can both help lift others out of poverty and create independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This closeness engenders a kind of transparency and a genuine caring within the community which western businesses find so hard to emulate.<\/p>\n<p>At its core is the expectation that people will look after one another without reward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis (expectation) makes people accountable, no matter how well off they are,\u201d says Ida, explaining that if a person is found to be doing less than is expected they are deeply frowned upon, irrespective of their social or professional position.<\/p>\n<p>This brings to mind the <a title=\"The Potential Brutality of CSR\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainabilityforum.com\/blog\/potential-brutality-csr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">security guards in Seattle<\/a>, censured for not intervening in a vicious attack happening literally within touching distance.<\/p>\n<p>They were just following company policy which, were told, makes their actions (or lack of them) acceptable.\u00a0 I wonder whether a burden of expectation to look after other people, which Ida speaks of, would have encouraged them to act differently?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Can Western CSR Bring Any Value To Africa?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Lastly, I ask Ida whether western CSR could bring anything of value to Africa.\u00a0 She tells me about her worry that foreign corporations can have a detrimental effect upon the communities they work within.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s just giving people an excuse to do nothing then no,\u201d she explains, \u201cBut if they\u2019re actually doing something worthwhile then yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is where Ida\u2019s own experience once again comes to the fore.\u00a0 As well as running Ethnic Supplies she\u2019s also involved in <a title=\"Let Them Help Themselves\" href=\"http:\/\/lethemhelpthemselves.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let Them Help Themselves<\/a>, a small charity which works with communities in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-32147 lazyload\" title=\"Ruhanga Co Operative Worker\" alt=\"Ruhanga Co Operative Worker\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Co-Operative-Worker-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Co-Operative-Worker-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Co-Operative-Worker-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Co-Operative-Worker-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Co-Operative-Worker-900x602.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Co-Operative-Worker-924x618.jpg 924w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Ruhanga-Co-Operative-Worker.JPG 1600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;\" \/>Unlike donation led charities, Let Them Help Themselves engages with communities to help them establish small businesses which can then trade in the local neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in the village of Ruhanga, Uganda, the charity has helped to build, equip and staff of a nursery school.<\/p>\n<p>Donations have played a part but the linchpin is the establishment of a co-operative through which the villagers can engage visitors to the nearby mountain gorillas.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>It&#8217;s About Communities, Not Money<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is a radical departure from normal chequebook philanthropy.\u00a0 Instead of supplying the money to fund the teachers, the charity is helping the villagers to establish self sufficiency through sustainable small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>One of the oldest sayings in the CSR book is <a title=\"Proverbs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.quotationspage.com\/quote\/2279.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the ancient Chinese proverb<\/a>: \u201cGive a man a fish and you feed him for a day: teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It should be on the wall of every overseas CSR office of every overseas company, just to make sure the communities they work within come to help themselves, rather than <a title=\"Sixteen Tons\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sixteen_Tons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">owing their soul to the company store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><sup><strong>All Pictures<\/strong> (c) Ida Horner.
