href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/bestcompanies\/2009\/index.html\">100 Best Companies to Work For<\/a> (2010 should be along soon, by the way), a healthy percentage of the reader comments are some version of \u201cthat may be true about Company X in general, but where <em>I<\/em> work . . . \u201c<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, people employed by large corporations identify with the local office or agency where they work, the division or department they work in, the group that they work with.\u00a0 And that has several implications for the corporate Careers site.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Very large companies may have many separate divisions or subsidiaries, multiple global entities, and\/or\u00a0 numerous entry paths (new graduate,\u00a0 experienced professional, hourly worker, and so on).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Q: <\/strong> How can the site effectively communicate across all these possibilities?<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Mid-sized to large companies may have dozens of locations and\/or many different departments and groups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Q. <\/strong>What if there are differences in culture and policies among these various entities?<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Employee profiles and testimonials from selected segments of the organization may not reflect other segments accurately at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Q: <\/strong> Are there issues of misrepresentation (intentionally or otherwise)?<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Combining a variety of entities into one site may be confusing for visitors\u2014but splitting them up into a lot of semi-related sites may be confusing in a different way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Q: <\/strong> What\u2019s the best approach for a specific company?<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Different entities within the organization may have different (even radically different) visions of the Careers site&#8211;objectives, approach, style, functionality, et cetera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Q: <\/strong>How can competing needs be reconciled?<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 Unfortunate events, management problems, and other negative circumstances may afflict just one component of the company but spread bad publicity to other components.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Q: <\/strong>Can the employer brand be protected from the effects of localized difficulties?<\/p>\n<p>Those are just some of the issues\u2014and there are no easy answers.\u00a0 However, each question is worth serious strategic consideration<\/p>\n<p><em>Two observations: <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsites can be used to present smaller employment segments more effectively and accurately.<\/li>\n<li>It takes attentive oversight to successfully communicate <em>one<\/em> employer brand across <em>many<\/em> employment segments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Two good examples:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Far-flung KPMG does a nice job of integrating multiple locations and career pthats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Global Website: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kpmg.com\/Global\/JoinUs\/\">http:\/\/www.kpmg.com\/Global\/JoinUs\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">U.S. Website: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kpmgcareers.com\/index.shtml\">http:\/\/www.kpmgcareers.com\/index.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Multi-functional Sodexo makes great use of microsites for diversified messaging and social media for unified messaging.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sodexousa.com\/usen\/careers\/careers.asp\">http:\/\/www.sodexousa.com\/usen\/careers\/careers.asp<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>One more point worth noting:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Six of the top ten qualities that contribute to job satisfaction (according to SHRM\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shrm.org\/Research\/SurveyFindings\/Articles\/Pages\/2009JobSatisfactionSurveyReport.aspx\">2009 Employee Job Satisfaction Survey<\/a>) are more concerned with the local workplace than with the company at large:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>opportunities      to use skills and abilities<\/li>\n<li>feeling      safe in the work environment<\/li>\n<li>relationship      with immediate supervisor<\/li>\n<li>management      recognition of employee job performance<\/li>\n<li>communication      between employees and senior management<\/li>\n<li>the      work itself<\/li>\n<li>autonomy      and independence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(<em>Merci<\/em> to <a
