Step 1<\/strong> Read this post by John Zappe on ere.net:\u00a0 Guests Invited to Hear Million Job Board Plan<\/a>.\u00a0 My summary:<\/em> Direct Employers, a \u201cnonprofit association of employers\u201d has invited 29 people to a meeting which will \u201canswer questions that have come up\u201d about the Direct Employers plan to build \u201ctens of thousands\u201d of new job boards using the .jobs top domain.\u00a0 The names of the 29 people are not revealed, but Zappe says they are \u201ceasily recognizable.\u201d Included are \u201crecruitment leaders,\u201d \u201cjob board CEOs,\u201d and \u201ca few industry writers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/strong> Read this other<\/em> post by John Zappe on ere.net:\u00a0 A \u201cUniverse\u201d of .Jobs Job Boards is Set to Launch.<\/a> Follow carefully (it\u2019s very twisty) and continue to the end\u2014which is a bit challenging to common logic.<\/p>\n

Step 3 <\/strong>Visit the curiously cute Employ Media sales site http:\/\/goto.jobs\/<\/a>.\u00a0 View the tutorials if you like, then click Buy Now and choose GoDaddy.\u00a0 There you will see a nuts-and-bolts explanation of the .jobs \u201crules,\u201d available from links in the right-hand column.<\/p>\n

Step 4 <\/strong>Visit the stately Direct Employers website http:\/\/www.directemployers.org\/<\/a>.\u00a0 Scroll down and click on \u201cEnter the Universe.\u201d\u00a0 Oops\u2014apparently Universe has been sucked into a black hole. [Now fixed – Ed<\/em>]\n

Step 5 <\/strong> Re-read Guests Invited to Hear Million Job Board Plan<\/a>.\u00a0 Notice the following statement by Direct Employers Executive Director Bill Warren:\u00a0 \u201cWe are not so vain that we think anyone really cares about what we are doing. However, we have had many phone calls with questions about what we are doing and how we are building out the domains.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

Those two sentences do not seem to fit together comfortably. But it gets better!\u00a0 Scroll down and read the Comments section, which turns into a very subtle scrap among apparent stakeholders in the issue.<\/p>\n

Since I am the outsidest possible outsider in terms of these proceedings, my only goal in the present post is to encourage attention.\u00a0 After a few readings of the above items (plus another Zappe post<\/a> on the topic, which provides valuable background), I think I\u2019ve figured out what the flap is all about. But your guess is just as good as mine, so I won\u2019t attempt to interpret.<\/p>\n

However, I will hypothesize.\u00a0 Suppose a not-for-profit group joined forces with a for-profit group and sort of annexed a large amount of potentially high-value territory in an area that was supposed to be controlled by a certain set of rules.\u00a0 Suppose other people with interests in the area asked questions about this, but couldn\u2019t get very good answers.\u00a0 Suppose it was all awfully important to begin with, but\u2014since everything moves so darn fast these years!\u2014it may turn out to be somewhat irrelevant in the end.<\/p>\n

According to the Comments exchange noted above, the\u00a0 names of the invitees were not publicized as a matter of courtesy.\u00a0 And it appears many of them were expected to be otherwise engaged at the time of the scheduled meeting, while Warren expects to be otherwise engaged at the time of a public forum where matters might have been clarified to a larger audience.\u00a0 So it doesn\u2019t look as if there will be an outcome to this story any time soon.\u00a0 But it\u2019s definitely worth knowing about . . .<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
