{"id":31702,"date":"2010-01-29T11:33:19","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T11:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=31702"},"modified":"2021-01-07T17:52:11","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T16:52:11","slug":"the-january-wrap-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/the-january-wrap-up\/","title":{"rendered":"The January Wrap-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pqRight\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Russian-Ice-Aquarium.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31704 lazyload\" title=\"Russian Ice Aquarium\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Russian-Ice-Aquarium-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Russian Ice Aquarium\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Russian-Ice-Aquarium-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Russian-Ice-Aquarium-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Russian-Ice-Aquarium.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/199;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I had so much fun doing the end-of-year posts that I want to repeat the experience regularly.\u00a0 So the Monthly Wrap will (a) cover short things that didn\u2019t fit elsewhere, and (b) update things that did.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the debut:<\/p>\n<p><strong>An update on \u201cthe Twitter experiment.\u201d <\/strong>A couple of months ago, in the post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/hr-2-0-superstars-a-handy-guide-plus-some-thoughts-about-%E2%80%9Cfollowing%E2%80%9D\/\">HR Superstars: A Handy Guide<\/a>, I promised to follow everyone on the iCMS list of \u201c21 HR Leaders in Web 2.0 You Must Follow\u201d and report on the experiment.\u00a0 I duly created a Twitter account and set up a TwitterDeck column to show every superstar tweet.\u00a0 However, after a couple of days I decided that only 16 of them offered enough substantive content (as opposed to personality chat) to be relevant, so I trimmed a bit.\u00a0 I did not tweet from this account at all for the first six weeks, but it was found by a few other tweeters, and I&#8217;ve followed back those that seem to offer interesting content.<\/p>\n<p><em>The interim findings: <\/em> Quality and quantity are not mutually exclusive, but they often do not go together.\u00a0 A couple of frequent tweeters are consistently interesting, a couple are not.\u00a0 On the other hand, tweeting infrequently does not necessarily lead to better tweets!\u00a0 And on the <em>third<\/em> hand\u2014I realize even more than ever that everyone\u2019s personal filter is set to a different version of what\u2019s meaningful\/interesting\/useful.\u00a0 \u00a0So I\u2019m still working on how to draw general conclusions from the HR\/Recruiting Twitter stream.\u00a0 Next step in the experiment is to go beyond the original list and see who else is rippling this particular pool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unintended Messaging strikes again. <\/strong>I\u2019m expecting this to be a monthly feature!\u00a0 In January, the most striking example I encountered was on the website of a mid-sized professional services company.\u00a0 I think the page was labeled \u201cExecutive Leadership\u201d but it could have been some close variant of same.\u00a0 Photographs of the leadership folks were arranged in three columns and (let\u2019s say) eight rows.\u00a0 On the bottom row were three women.\u00a0 You guessed it\u2014the <em>only<\/em> three women.\u00a0 Title-wise, they were indeed at the lowest level of the leadership hierarchy, which was arranged from President\/CEO\/Etc. down to Director of Marketing\/HR\/Whatever.<\/p>\n<p>How to avoid this unfortunate image, in which women appear to be crushed under a heavy stack of men?\u00a0 My first thought is alphabetical arrangement.\u00a0 Second would be some type of grouping that would allow the women to be scattered in among the men.\u00a0 For example, put the top four guys in a C-level group, then break up the others into functional groups such as operational, people, or whatever would work.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet there\u2019s a way . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are they thinking at Kashi? <\/strong>It&#8217;s nothing to do with Careers directly\u2014but a gaffe in corporate communications will eventually rub off on the employer brand.\u00a0 Short version:\u00a0 Those of us longing for Kashi waffles, and finding none at the store for several weeks, went to the Kashi website for insight.\u00a0 Buried on a deep page was a small note saying:\u00a0 \u201cWe are experiencing delays in production due to repairs and equipment upgrades at our waffle facility.
