So we fast-forward to a very recent post and presentation by the guru of now, Jeremy Owyang:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/10\/slides-real-time-web-is-not-fast-enough%E2%80%93-three-strategies-for-business\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+WebStrategyByJeremiah+%28Web+Strategy+by+Jeremiah%29&amp;utm_content=My+Yah\">Real Time Web Is Not Fast Enough\u2014Three Strategies For Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019m writing this, Jeremy is tweeting his real-time observations from LeWeb, \u201cEurope\u2019s largest Internet conference,\u201d which is focused this year on (you guessed it) \u201cReal Time.\u201d\u00a0 And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leweb.net\/\">LeWeb<\/a> is live broadcasting in another window on my desktop.<\/p>\n<p>Which is a perfect example of the real-time-web experience.\u00a0 I\u2019m semi-watching the conference (which is in another country) along with nearly 3,000 other viewers, while getting tweets from people who are there, while simultaneously researching the topic on the \u201cslow-time web\u201d and writing about it on my WiFi laptop.<\/p>\n<p>All of this takes very little effort on my part (though of course I\u2019ve spent time setting up the infrastructure).\u00a0 Nor do I need fancy equipment\u2014everything I use comes from regular retailers and is reasonably priced&#8211;and I have normal broadband cable service, which is not especially fast.<\/p>\n<p>There really are few barriers between the average user and the real-time web.\u00a0 But there are some real challenges involved for companies.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Real time data is exploding at a rapid pace with the influx of status features and mobile devices. \u00a0This brings new opportunities for people to get information when they need it and opportunities [for] the companies that want to provide contextual information. \u00a0Yet, despite the opportunities, most companies are unable to keep up with the \u201cSlow time\u201d web as it is.<\/p>\n<p>More to come about those challenges\u2014and some emerging prescriptions\u2014in future posts.\u00a0 But for now, I strongly recommend Jeremy\u2019s post mentioned above, along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/04\/when-real-time-is-not-fast-enough-the-intent-based-web\/\">a more detailed version<\/a> in which he offers some forward thinking about \u201cwhat\u2019s next\u201d (the Intention Web) and how business can meet the challenges of \u201cright now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Takeaway:<\/em> The time to start thinking about now is . . . well, you see the point.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Many thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kasrak\/3288961653\/\">kasrak<\/a> for the evocative \u201cself-portrait.\u201d)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Start thinking about real time.\u00a0 Start now.
