{"id":31052,"date":"2009-12-16T16:55:06","date_gmt":"2009-12-16T16:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=31052"},"modified":"2009-12-14T09:33:50","modified_gmt":"2009-12-14T09:33:50","slug":"careers-site-slide-deck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/careers-site-slide-deck\/","title":{"rendered":"Riddle:  How Is a Careers Site Like a PPT Presentation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Actually, a Careers site is pretty much exactly like a PowerPoint presentation.\u00a0 Which means the answer to this riddle isn\u2019t very funny.<\/p>\n<p>But the answer <em>is<\/em> important, and here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n<p>PowerPoint presentations (affectionately known as PPTs, or sometimes \u201cdecks\u201d) have become the most frequent means of communicating information in many\u2014perhaps most\u2014organizations.\u00a0 And for purposes of discussion, we\u2019ll just lump in niche platforms like the Mac program Keynote and online options like SlideRocket, which are PowerPoint-by-any-other name, even if they are better in some respects.<\/p>\n<p>The result in all cases is basically the same:\u00a0 ideas\/information organized in slide-sized \u201cbites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once you start thinking about it this way, a website could be seen as a stack of presentation-like pages, each one displaying several slides\u2014sort of like the Slide Sorter view in PowerPoint.\u00a0 The visitor has self-serve access to these slides, so they can jump around to different parts of the \u201cpresentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And now to the point.\u00a0 The rules for creating good slides\/presentations are few and definite, but mostly ignored.\u00a0 For example, some excellent rules are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t put too much information on one slide\u2014use several slides to build a theme or explain a complex idea.<\/li>\n<li>Include something visual on every slide\u2014but be sure the visual content is informative, not merely decorative.<\/li>\n<li>Be consistent in formatting\u2014not only on each slide, but across the whole presentation.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a clear structure that organizes the slides\u2014and make sure the audience always knows where they are and where they are going.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These rules apply every bit as well to a website design, but are just as often ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Presentation expert Olivia Mitchell takes the psychology of PowerPoint even further in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speakingaboutpresenting.com\/design\/new-evidence-bullet-points\/\">New evidence that bullet-points don\u2019t work<\/a>.\u00a0 This substantive post explains research that shows improved comprehension in audiences viewing \u201csparse\u201d slides (strong graphics, little text) rather than conventional slides that combine bullet-point text with smaller illustrations.\u00a0 Mitchell goes into detail on the factors that involved\u2014well worth a read.<\/p>\n<p>Now in fact, most Careers sites I visit use lots of bullet points and lots of text.\u00a0 To validate this impression, I picked out (completely at random) three big companies in completely different industry segments, two of which I\u2019ve never visited before.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what I found . . .<\/p>\n<div class=\"pqRight\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Bullets-Costco.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Costco\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Bullets-Costco-300x258.jpg\" alt=\"Bullets--Costco\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/190;\" \/><br \/>\n<span class=\"tiny\">Click to enlarge<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Yahoo Careers<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearall\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"clearall\">\n<p>Since website visitors aren\u2019t getting additional information from speakers, the main ideas obviously must be explained on the page.\u00a0 But breaking up text into thematic zones, putting some information into a graphical format, or even just changing the round, black bullets to (for example) square red bullets would certainly liven up the page.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Replacing boring bullets with interesting ones would be really low-hanging fruit!\u00a0 And there are probably quite a few other tweaks that could improve the \u201cpresentation\u201d qualities of a typical Careers site and bring about high-value change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Actually, a Careers site is pretty much exactly like a PowerPoint presentation.\u00a0 Which means the answer to this riddle isn\u2019t very funny.
