GPS for Smartphones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomtom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">TomTom<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garmin.com\/garmin\/cms\/site\/us\" target=\"_blank\">Garmin&#8217;s<\/a> turn to be worried.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a> has rolled out its free navigation service using Google maps available through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motorola.com\/consumers\/US-EN\/Motorola-DROID-US-EN.do?vgnextoid=256875f95f2c3210VgnVCM1000008406b00aRCRD\" target=\"_blank\">Motorola&#8217;s Droid<\/a> smartphone (and coming soon to more phones).<\/p>\n<p>It appears Google has done it again.\u00a0 What do GPS companies have to worry about?\u00a0 Let&#8217;s take a look:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Google&#8217;s navigation tool is free: <\/strong>Instead of paying for a GPS or a mapping service subscription through cell phone providers, consumers can benefit from Google&#8217;s usual model &#8212; free.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google provides one-stop-shopping: <\/strong>Yes, this navigation tool is just one more way that Google is on track to rule the world by providing access to every kind of information you could possibly need at your fingertips at anytime and on one device.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google is a brand people know and trust:<\/strong> Like it or not, people know the Google brand and trust it.\u00a0 That ready-made brand recognition and trust is likely to go a long way in terms of shifting consumers from stand-alone GPS devices and subscription services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Put it this way &#8212; if Google&#8217;s new navigation tool for smartphones works well and keeps its free price tag (and becomes available on more smartphones than Motorola&#8217;s Droid), there will be little need for anything else.\u00a0 In other words, the same things that happened with online search, online email, and so on, will happen to GPS.<\/p>\n<p>The question becomes not whether or not Google will be successful in its new venture into GPS, but will any other company be able to challenge Google in that new venture?<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/29\/technology\/companies\/29gps.html?_r=1&amp;partner=rss&amp;emc=rss\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a>, even the progressive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> is behind in this area.\u00a0 Can anyone ever compete with Google?\u00a0 What do you think?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s TomTom and Garmin&#8217;s turn to be worried.\u00a0 Google has rolled out its free navigation service using Google maps available through Motorola&#8217;s Droid smartphone (and coming soon to more phones).
