Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a> brings us a great example of how NOT to use social media to market your business, your brand, your products, or anything else you might ever consider promoting online in any way shape or form with its <a href=\"http:\/\/houseparty.com\/windows7\" target=\"_blank\">Global Windows 7 Launch Party<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think I could make this story much funnier than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2009\/09\/29\/microsoft_windows7_launch_party_videos\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Register<\/a> did, so check out their take for a good laugh.\u00a0 In the meantime, here&#8217;s my view on this marketing &#8216;miss&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>First, the Global Windows 7 Launch Party is a worldwide online event hosted on the HouseParty.com Web site, where anyone can sign up to host a party to celebrate the launch of Microsoft <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Vista 2<\/span> Windows 7 with their friends and loved ones.\u00a0 So if you want to lose your friends and annoy your family members, <a href=\"http:\/\/houseparty.com\/windows7\" target=\"_blank\">go here<\/a> and sign up to host your own Windows 7 launch party right now.<\/p>\n<p>Why so negative, you ask?\u00a0 It&#8217;s not so much the idea of the Global Windows 7 Launch Party, which seems lame enough in and of itself, as it is the promotional videos Microsoft has unleashed on the unsuspecting online world to teach people how to host a Global Windows 7 Launch Party.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot do these videos justice in text summary.\u00a0 You must either watch them or read the article on The Register for full humorous impact.\u00a0 However, I will include them below for your analysis:<\/p>\n<p>First, the &#8220;How to Host a Global Windows 7 Launch Party&#8221; video complete with preparation instructions, agenda suggestions, and more uncomfortable banter than an interview between Glen Beck and Richard Gere might be.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1cX4t5-YpHQ&#038;color1=0xb1b1b1&#038;color2=0xcfcfcf&#038;hl=en&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;fs=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1cX4t5-YpHQ&#038;color1=0xb1b1b1&#038;color2=0xcfcfcf&#038;hl=en&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowScriptAccess=\"always\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Next, the terrible party idea suggestion.\u00a0 Copy music and send your friends home with it.\u00a0 Notice the missing disclaimer that copying music you don&#8217;t own or have permission to copy is illegal.\u00a0 Oops.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/zV33tMK4SM8&#038;color1=0xb1b1b1&#038;color2=0xcfcfcf&#038;hl=en&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;fs=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/zV33tMK4SM8&#038;color1=0xb1b1b1&#038;color2=0xcfcfcf&#038;hl=en&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowScriptAccess=\"always\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>And now the final piece of torture.\u00a0 Notice how at 30-seconds into the video, the over-zealous partier proclaims, &#8220;Cool!&#8221;\u00a0 I believe the real-world exclamation at this point would be something more along the lines of, &#8220;Dude!\u00a0 We can&#8217;t be friends anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/kI83rBQGM44&#038;color1=0xb1b1b1&#038;color2=0xcfcfcf&#038;hl=en&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;fs=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/kI83rBQGM44&#038;color1=0xb1b1b1&#038;color2=0xcfcfcf&#038;hl=en&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowScriptAccess=\"always\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>So yes, this post was a bit more sarcastic than you might usually see here on Corporate Eye, but if you read any of my other blogs, then you know I&#8217;m very sarcastic in real life.\u00a0 And I couldn&#8217;t resist this one.\u00a0 This story was just too lame to ignore.\u00a0 I&#8217;m waiting for the Windows 7 Launch Party skit on <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>.\u00a0 If only that show was as good as it used to be, but I digress.\u00a0 What&#8217;s the SNL equivalent outside of the U.S.?\u00a0 There&#8217;s parody gold here!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft brings us a great example of how NOT to use social media to market your business, your brand, your products, or anything else you might ever consider promoting online in any way shape or form with its Global Windows 7 Launch Party campaign.
