Noble has been a bit savvier (for example, selling off its mall-based stores sooner rather than too late), so it&#8217;s in relatively better shape.<\/p>\n<p>But the reality is&#8211;traditional bookselling has been hit hard by a variety of economic and cultural factors, and the whole business model is in the midst of a huge, painful, and irreversible shift.\u00a0 The market for CDs and DVDs, formerly a staple at both chains, is declining rapidly; downloadable books a la Kindle are on the ascendency; and the old, centralized publishing industry is rapidly being overtaken by a diffuse, diverse assortment of alternative publishing strategies.<\/p>\n<p>So what&#8217;s the good news?\u00a0 Not much yet.\u00a0 But necessity is indeed mothering up some invention in the book world, and that&#8217;s a good reason to take a look at the Career sites of the two largest booksellers in America.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say there is no comparison.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barnesandnobleinc.com\/jobs\/jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B&amp;N<\/a> is bookish and buttoned up, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.borders.com\/online\/store\/BGIView_careers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Borders<\/a> is salsa-dancing hot.\u00a0 Seriously.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/b-n1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26711 lazyload\" title=\"b-n1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/b-n1-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"b-n1\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/b-n1-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/b-n1-150x111.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/b-n1.jpg 780w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/218;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clearall\">Unfortunately, I\u00a0 couldn&#8217;t find out when this design was implemented at Borders, so there&#8217;s no way of relating it to their overall business situation or marketing approach.\u00a0 However, last year Borders took back its online operations from Amazon (after 17 years), and the Careers area may have been updated when the retail site was built.<\/p>\n<p>Also unfortunately&#8211;there&#8217;s no way of knowing whether Borders gets better\/more applicants through its site than B&amp;N.\u00a0 But for what it&#8217;s worth, they&#8217;ve done the right things at a fundamental level:\u00a0 highlighting special opportunities (front-page AARP feature) and culture (front-page diversity feature); offering substantive information on benefits, as well as detailed position descriptions; and providing a seamless search-and-apply process.\u00a0 (Barnes &amp; Nobles does not have online search and application&#8211;listings are outsourced to HotJobs.)<\/p>\n<p>No bells and whistles&#8211;videos, Flash, etc., at the Borders site.\u00a0 A nice look and feel, though, suitable for a book business trying to reinvent itself in the digital age.\u00a0 I had the impression that job-seekers are being invited along for an interesting adventure.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, I definitely prefer the design of the customer-facing pages at Barnes &amp;
