Redemption Comes in the Form of New Bing Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lately, I&#8217;ve been writing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/microsofts-plain-jane-bing-logo-good-or-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft&#8217;s lack of creative branding<\/a> here on Corporate Eye, but today, I can actually say that I saw some marketing come from Microsoft that didn&#8217;t put me to sleep.\u00a0 Have you seen any of the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bing<\/a> commercials on television?\u00a0 If not, you can watch the one I saw last night which appears below or check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/bing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bing channel on YouTube<\/a> where you can find a bunch of Bing commercials.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"295\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/yIxfk3hS0uU&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;rel=0\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/yIxfk3hS0uU&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;rel=0\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I think the concept is strong &#8212; most of us who use a search engine and get lost in the myriad of unrelated and useless results can empathize with the people in the Bing ad above.\u00a0\u00a0I also\u00a0like the idea of branding the time-wasting and annoying experience of picking through search results to find something that&#8217;s actually useful as \u00a0&#8220;search overload syndrome&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 However, I don&#8217;t think people are overloaded with &#8216;searches&#8217;.\u00a0 They&#8217;re overloaded with meaningless results, particularly spam results.\u00a0 I think search overload syndrome (which I&#8217;m sure will get the SOS acronym) could have been better.<\/p>\n<p>The complete campaign, dubbed\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/aw\/content_display\/esearch\/e3i8ec34ef6f7ad9c747ab1c693a8956d1c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bing ad\u00a0&#8220;manifesto&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0was created by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jwt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JWT<\/a> and cost Microsoft a mere $100 million.\u00a0 It appears to be working so far.\u00a0 As I mentioned in my post earlier this week, Microsoft Bing has bypassed Yahoo! as the second most used search engine behind Google.\u00a0 What remains to be seen is whether or not the Bing product will live up to the hype.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll have to wait and see if Bing is still in second place in 6 months or a year from now.<\/p>\n<p>Now, back to the commercial in the video above (and the others from this campaign).\u00a0 I think the only real problem I have with it is the rebranding of Bing as a &#8220;discovery engine&#8221; rather than a search engine.\u00a0 That term doesn&#8217;t work for me for two reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I don&#8217;t want to &#8220;discover&#8221; anything when I&#8217;m conducting a keyword search.\u00a0 Ultimately, I want the perfect result to be delivered to me, so there is no discovery required on my part.\u00a0 That word connotes more work for me &#8212; like an explorer or archaeologist spending years trying to find a hidden treasure or lost artifact.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft isn&#8217;t fooling anyone.\u00a0 If it looks like a search engine, acts like a search engine, and works like a search engine &#8212; it&#8217;s a search engine.\u00a0 I know they&#8217;re trying to differentiate Bing from Google, but I&#8217;m not buying the &#8220;discovery engine&#8221; line.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There is quite a debate going on at the Bing YouTube channel about these commercials with strong arguments from both sides.\u00a0 Regardless of whether or not a person likes these ads, you have to agree that they&#8217;re better than most
