{"id":15801,"date":"2009-06-08T01:39:13","date_gmt":"2009-06-08T00:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=15801"},"modified":"2009-06-06T16:46:13","modified_gmt":"2009-06-06T15:46:13","slug":"penske-rescues-saturn-from-gm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/penske-rescues-saturn-from-gm\/","title":{"rendered":"Penske Rescues Saturn from GM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15821 lazyload\" title=\"saturn-penske\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/saturn-penske.jpg\" alt=\"saturn-penske\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/saturn-penske.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/saturn-penske-150x100.jpg 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 240px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 240\/160;\" \/>I remember back in 1994 when I bought my first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saturn.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saturn<\/a> and in 1996 when I bought my second Saturn.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t buy another after that.<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning, Saturn was a brand built on differentiation and word-of-mouth marketing.\u00a0 It was a brand that created expectations and lived up to them.\u00a0 It was a brand with a clear brand promise, &#8220;a different kind of car company,&#8221; and it lived up to that brand promise again and again.\u00a0 The result was a powerful cult brand with a large band of loyal brand advocates.\u00a0 It became a relationship brand that relied on brand experiences &#8212; in the showroom, in the service department, at the manufacturing plant, and even at the annual Saturn owners picnic, which drew thousands of loyal Saturn owners from around the United States each year to share their love of the Saturn brand.<\/p>\n<p>In just a few years later, everything changed, and Saturn has never been the same.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gm.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General M0tors<\/a> decided to abandon the Saturn brand promise in return for higher profits, loyal customers noticed.\u00a0 They left the brand finding no value in the relationship anymore.\u00a0 Saturn never recovered.<\/p>\n<p>But is there a chance for the Saturn brand to get back to its roots and become a powerful relationship brand again now that <a href=\"http:\/\/autos.yahoo.com\/articles\/autos_content_landing_pages\/1001\/gm-to-sell-saturn-brand-to-penske-dealership-chain\/;_ylc=X3oDMTE3cmhncjFqBF9TAzI3MTYxNDkEc2VjA2ZwLXRvZGF5BHNsawNzYXR1cm4tc29sZA--\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penske Automotive Group has acquired Saturn from GM<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>I think the answer is yes.\u00a0 The Saturn brand still has value.\u00a0 Consumers remember the early days of the Saturn brand when it truly did make the car buying and owning experience different.\u00a0 Will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penskeautomotive.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penske Automotive Group<\/a> try to recapture the strength of that brand promise or try something different to regain power for the brand?\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to say, but the fact that the Penske brand is powerful unto itself and well-respected by both the auto industry and consumers should bode well for the future of Saturn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still hopeful for Saturn.\u00a0 How about you?<\/p>\n<p><em>Image: <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/scobleizer\/2914405430\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Flickr<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remember back in 1994 when I bought my first Saturn and in 1996 when I bought my second Saturn.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t buy another after that.
