{"id":14561,"date":"2009-05-27T18:18:40","date_gmt":"2009-05-27T17:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/blog\/?p=14561"},"modified":"2020-01-02T18:26:29","modified_gmt":"2020-01-02T17:26:29","slug":"will-100-million-give-microsoft-the-ba-da-bing-it-needs-to-threaten-google","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/will-100-million-give-microsoft-the-ba-da-bing-it-needs-to-threaten-google\/","title":{"rendered":"Will $100 Million Give Microsoft the Ba-Da-BING It Needs to Threaten Google"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What do you think?\u00a0 Will a $100 re-branding and advertising push turn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2009\/05\/26\/microsoft_bing_search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft&#8217;s new incarnation of its Live Search product, named Bing<\/a>, create more than a blip in the radar screen of Google&#8217;s online search\u00a0monopoly?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The short answer &#8212; it&#8217;s doubtful.<\/p>\n<p>The long answer &#8212; it&#8217;s even more doubtful.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s face it.\u00a0 Google <em>owns <\/em>the online search market.\u00a0 We live in a Google world.\u00a0 A $100 investment by Microsoft to rebrand Live Search and attempt to steal market share from Google seems like a bizarre marketing strategy to me.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t care how much money they throw at the Bing initiative, there are too many strikes against Microsoft to become a search powerhouse at this point.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not saying Microsoft&#8217;s Bing won&#8217;t do well.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure it will survive just fine, but is this really the best Microsoft could come up with to save it&#8217;s flailing brand and business?\u00a0 Once again, they&#8217;ve missed the boat.\u00a0 Consumer&#8217;s haven&#8217;t been asking Microsoft for the next Google.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve been asking Microsoft to fix what&#8217;s already wrong with the brand, the company, and its products.\u00a0 In other words, trying to divert focus from Vista wrapped in Windows 7 clothing isn&#8217;t going to fix the core brand problems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I know Microsoft wants to gain a stronger foothold at the Google party, but the writing has been on the wall for a long time that they need to refocus the brand first. \u00a0Google wanna-be products aren&#8217;t the remedy to re-energizing the brand.<\/p>\n<p>Oh Microsoft, why do you disappoint us again and again?\u00a0 Can&#8217;t you just give us an operating system that works well?\u00a0 How about spending $100 million on that?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14611 lazyload\" title=\"microsoft-windows-vista-error-final\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/microsoft-windows-vista-error-final.png\" alt=\"microsoft-windows-vista-error-final\" width=\"505\" height=\"434\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/microsoft-windows-vista-error-final.png 505w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/microsoft-windows-vista-error-final-150x128.png 150w, https:\/\/www.corporate-eye.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/microsoft-windows-vista-error-final-300x257.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 505px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 505\/434;\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearall\"><\/div>\n<p>I guess that&#8217;s why I finally broke down and bought a Mac last year.\u00a0 I still use my Windows-based PC, but I curse out Windows far more often than I curse out my Mac.\u00a0 And don&#8217;t even get me started on Internet Explorer.<\/p>\n<p>How about you?\u00a0 Would you trust the Microsoft brand to give you a search engine that works well given their current brand image?\u00a0 Would you choose Bing over Google?\u00a0 What would make you switch?<\/p>\n<p>Good luck climbing the Google brand mountain, Microsoft, but my money&#8217;s still on Google.<\/p>\n<p><em>Image: <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/everdred\/171671284\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Flickr<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do you think?\u00a0 Will a $100 re-branding and advertising push turn Microsoft&#8217;s new incarnation of its Live Search product, named Bing, create more than a blip in the radar screen of Google&#8217;s online search\u00a0monopoly?\u00a0 The short answer &#8212; it&#8217;s doubtful.
